| NOW WE’RE RELEASING THE SEQUEL. Introducing the latest generation of D&K’s Curl-Free® clean-bursting nylon films designed for book cover manufacturing. D&K has been producing Curl-Free® Nylon films for over ten years. During that time, we’ve noticed that the smooth finish of many laminating jobs was inadequate when produced on bursting equipment. Now, D&K has found a solution to this problem with our newly engineered clean-bursting Curl-Free® Nylon film.
Fraying and jagged edges are caused when using bursting equipment in conjunction with polyester, nylon or films thicker than 1.3 mil. Fraying appears as excess film — like small hairs — on the ends of the laminated sheet. These frayed edges make it more difficult to register and stack sheets. Furthermore, bursting may increase curl because of the strain it induces, making post-lamination processing more difficult.
D&K has found a solution to this problem. Our newest generation of nylon films offer better tear properties while keeping the top-quality finish you expect from D&K films. Our new clean-bursting Curl-Free® Nylon makes it easier to cut, stack, fold and bind all of your laminating projects. They say the best part of the book is the finish. Nylon is Nylon... Inherent No-curl Properties Make Nylon an Ideal Laminating Film It’s a myth in our industry that there is only one company that sells non-curling nylon film. Not true – Nylon is widely available in the marketplace. Thermal laminating film companies that sell nylon by its actual name, or by any trade name designation, are in truth selling an equivalent film. In fact, there are only two qualified thermal laminating applications, nylon is nylon.
Book manufactures must realize they have more than one company to choose from when considering nylon. Nylon is not a new product in our industry. Some thermal film companies have simply done a good marketing job convincing book publishers and manufacturers that in order to achieve the no-curl benefit they desire, they have to request nylon by a specific trade name, such as one requests a “Kleenex”.
According to D&K’s film production manager, “One of the reasons why nylon film is so popular is that it is uniquely stable.” When exposed to heat, as during lamination, nylon doesn’t stretch or expand. Accordingly, when cooling, nylon doesn’t shrink or curl, due to its inherent stability and chemical properties. It is also widely believed that nylon absorbs moisture in the air at about the same rate as the paper substrate – yet another “plus” in the fight against curl.
The result of laminating with nylon creates a beautifully finished product, virtually without curl, now and later. Nylon also features excellent clarity and exceptional scratch, tear, and stain resistance.
Nylon is ideally suited for book manufactures and finishers who, for years, have searched for a laminated finish that wouldn’t curl. Applications include perfect bound, saddle stitch and soft cover book covers, as well as dust and book jackets. Our customers tell us that a book’s appearance is one of its primary selling forces. Therefore, having a spectacular non-curling cover becomes a necessity for them. Nylon is the ideal solution for the traditional moisture-related curl so often found in soft cover books and dust jackets.
Manufacturing of D&K’s Curl Free® nylon film has increased significantly over the past several years. We believe this product is quickly becoming the film of choice for the book manufacturers, particularly as competition for a more beautiful, more value-added and better selling finished product continues to increase.
